Laboratory Medicine Program
Lymphoid Neoplasia: B-cell Clonality (IGH, IGK)
Clinical Decription:
The immunoglobulin (Ig) genes are comprised of numerous discontinuous coding segments that somatically rearrange to produce antibody during B cell maturation. Each mature B cell or plasma cell has a unique rearrangement profile. A reactive process often demonstrates a polyclonal expansion of B-cells with different rearrangements whereas a malignant process will demonstrate a monoclonal expansion of B-cells with identical Ig gene rearrangements.
