Beta-2-microglobulin, serum
(B2-M)

Clinical Decription:
Beta-2-microglobulin is particularly rich on the surface membrane of B and T lymphocytes and all nucleated cells. Circulating beta-2-microglobulin is filtered by the glomeruli and 99.9% is reabsorbed and degraded in the proximal tubules and excreted in the urine. Reduced glomerular filtration rate causes an increase concentration of beta-2-microglobulin and creatinine in the serum. Beta-2-microglobulin is non-covalently bound to light chain of the human leukocyte antigen (A, B and C) class I so an increase level in the serum reflects immune disease progression in the body. Determination of beta-2-microglobulin is used to monitor lymphoproliferative diseases such as multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, systematic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and kidney disorders.
