Gentamicin is an aminoglycosidic antibiotic that exhibits high potency and a broad-spectrum bacterial action against both gram-negative and gram-positive organisms. It exhibits a narrow therapeutic index, which makes it hazardous, especially in patients with impaired renal function.

Traditional dosing- Sample just prior to dose. Do not take levels from same limb in which drug was infused. Centrifuge and aliquot sample.
