Clinical Decription:
The measurement of protein in urine is used mainly in the diagnosis and treatment of renal or cardiac diseases and in disorders of the thyroid gland The measurement of protein in CSF is used mainly in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases. Increases in SF protein may be due to:  Impairment of the blood-brain barrier, so that plasma proteins leak into the SF  Diffusion of plasma proteins, when they are increased, across a normal blood brain barrier (eg., multiple myeloma)  Diffusion of plasma proteins, when they are increased, across a normal blood brain barrier (eg., multiple myeloma) Synthesis of increased quantities of immunoglobulins by plasma cells within the blood-brain barrier.

Special Instructions: For 24 h urine, Discard first morning sample, collect all other urine for a 24 hour period, to include second morning sample. Record volume and aliquot.
