Clinical Decription:
Total bile acids are metabolized in the liver and, hence, serve as a marker for normal liver function. Serum total bile acids are increased in patients with acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, liver sclerosis and liver cancer.

Method: Enzymatic reaction; Diazyme DZ-Lite c270

Reference Ranges Used:
<= 10 µmol/L under fasting conditions

Specimen Type: serum
Volume: 3 mL (minimum: 1 mL)

Shipping: serum or plasma sent frozen at -10C or colder

Special Instructions: Fasting specimen is preferred. Separate from red cells within 2 hours of collection. Store and send frozen.
